I would argue it has less to do with swinging rightward and more unique circumstances. In Britain, the economy is beginning to pick up which usually favours the incumbent government, but also the fear of a Labour government propped up by the Scottish National Party probably sent most of the undecided votes in England towards the Tories. For starters Labour has never won in Britain without dominating Scotland which is usually a stronghold for them while the negative reaction to Labour being propped up by the SNP was not too dissimilar to the negative reaction to the Liberal-NDP coalition propped up by the Bloc which went over poorly in English Canada.

As for Alberta, I think the biggest mistake was the Wildrose floor crossings. Albertans generally felt the PCs had overstayed their welcome and wanted change, but by kneecapping the wild rose, they were in no position to win as well as too many saw the PCs and the Wildrose as one of the same so they voted NDP as the NDP represented change.

A better example is BC whereby the BC Liberals were able to push the BC Conservatives from double digits down to 4.7% and thus beat the NDP who they were widely expected to lose to. They did this not being moving rightward but rather stupid mistakes but both NDP and BC Conservatives as well as Christy Clark came across as the most competent leader.
